Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to improve your brain with Neuro EP treatments?
The average amount of time it takes to achieve significant improvements in your brain is 4-6 months, however every person is different. Some people begin to notice some subtle improvements in the very first session. But most people take longer, sometimes people take 10-15 sessions to start noticing the improvements.
The real answer to this question is like asking “after I start exercising or lifting weights, how long does it take before I notice that I’m stronger.” Or “how long does it take to learn to play the piano or ride a bicycle, or learn a language?” Well, these are all different for different people. Some people can learn these brain activities faster than other people. But some people take longer. Anybody who gives up early will not learn any of these things, and “learning” is literally changing your brain activity and brain pathways. Neuroscientists call this process of changing the brain activity and brain pathways “Neuroplasticity.“
Some things that clearly affect how fast people learn and improve from Neuro EP treatments include:
How motivated are you to improve?
How frequently are you training?
How consistently are you training?
Are you doing other things that will improve or worsen the learning process (neuroplasticy)? There are at least 7 categories of things that have been shown to speed up or slow down learning (and therefore speed up or slow down improvement in your symptoms). These categories are:
Using lots of alcohol or drugs
Taking neuro-active prescription or OTC medications
Taking brain supplements like high quality Omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamins, probiotics, etc can improve the neuroplasticity leaning process. According to Michel Cohen in his excellent book, Neurofeedback 101, there is independent, scientific research showing brain benefits on two supplements that he recommends: Hardy Daily Essential Nutrients and Total Amino Solutions by ‘Jennesa Living’ (sp?). They are both Micronutrient with excellent GI absorption
Sleep: good deep sleep makes learning faster, poor or inconsistent sleep slows down the learning process
Nutrition, toxins, mold exposure, : healthy balanced anti inflammatory diet including high quality proteins and “good fats” (like fish, walnuts, avocados, olive oil, etc), will improve learning, but junk food, processed food, and simple sugars can slow down learning
Certain allergic reactions can cause inflammation and slow the learning process, especially allergies to certain foods like dairy, gluten, nuts, chocolate, certain wines, etc.
Enhancing learning with other Neuro EP modalities to improve your brain like HRV training, other forms of biofeedback, or meditation, mindfulness, yoga, etc.
How long is each session?
Typically, each session visit in our office is about 45 minutes. You can adjust this time by letting us know your preferences.
If you receive remote treatments at your home, we recommend 30 minutes for neurofeedback. You can also add 10-15 minutes of HRV training to improve your results, but you can train for as long or as short as you want.
How many sessions per week are recommended?
We typically recommend 2-3 sessions per week, depending on what treatment you are getting. This can be adjusted either up or down depending on your situation and preferences.
How much does it cost?
We have multiple different programs depending on your situation. The typical cost for Neuro EP treatments (depending on what you need) is $598 per month for unlimited sessions.
Will my health insurance cover the costs?
Almost all US health insurance/medical insurance companies cover the consultations and provider visits related to your evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment by our providers.
Typically, most insurance companies will not pay the $598 per month fee for specific Neuro EP treatments. However, some medical insurance companies will also pay a portion of this cost. If your insurance company pays for some of the specific Neuro EP treatments, you will be refunded/reimbursed anything that you paid which was covered by your insurance.
Are the improvements that I achieve permanent?
Yes, assuming that you follow our recommendations, typically the benefits that you receive from our Neuro EP treatments are long-lasting. Sometimes people may need an occasional “brain refresher” if they start to develop a recurrence of symptoms later after stopping treatment, but this is relatively uncommon.
Where is your office for treatment sessions?
We are physically located in Nashville, Tennessee, USA, and we have designated treatment rooms, where we do all the preparation. Alternatively, we can treat you remotely at your house with video telemedicine technology.
Can I perform Neuro EP treatments remotely at home?
Yes, absolutely!
If Neurofeedback can be so helpful, how come I never heard of it, and why doesn't my doctor know about it?
Neurofeedback was discovered as an electrophysiological (EP) treatment in the 1980s (check dates on Grok), just as it was gaining steam, new specific neurotransmitter drugs (neurochemical/ pharmaceutical treatments) were introduced (Prozac which was first released in 19__). These pharmaceutical treatments altered neurotransmitters at the synapses of neurons where EP treatments also work. These pharmaceuticals helped with some of the same symptoms as neurofeedback and many physicians preferred medications because they are easier to administer and they tend to work faster. We didn’t unravel the problems such as side effects, dependence, and gradual worsening of brain activity (see Neuro-Chemistry section) until many years or decades later. The pharmaceutical industry would then release a newer version of the drug, and it would also take years or decades to unravel the problems with the newer drug. The cycle continues today.
Patients also prefer a “quick fix” with medications, but often patients eventually get discouraged by side-effects and the need to take the meds for the rest of their lives. They often never hear of the possibility of drug-free results from Neuro EP treatments that can be sustainable long term (although often take time to achieve).
The pharmaceutical industry spends billions of dollars every year making sure that physicians and patients are aware of their medication options because it is extremely profitable with $____ Billons in annual revenues. There is no analogous big industry pushing Neuro EP treatments such as Neurofeedback, because unlike pharmaceutical meds, there is less money earned when the treatment does not need to be continued for life.
What happens during my Neurofeedback session?
You will be escorted into the treatment room into a comfortable chair, where we will apply sensors to your head without needles or pain. We will then record your brain activity, and depending on your exact treatment protocol, you will either hear or see a representation of your brain activity. This process allows your brain to improve abnormal activity, which then often improves your symptoms.
What is the difference between a Single Neurofeedback session and Unlimited Neuro EP Services?
A Single Neurofeedback session is for people who want to experience a session without treatment of a specific symptom. If you are ready for treatment, the Unlimited Neuro EP Services provides access to as many treatments and brain maps as you want per month.
The Neuro EP treatments include:
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) Monitoring
GSR/Skin Conductance, Hand temp, HR Biofeedback
HRV Training
IR/NIR Photobiomodulation
ISF Cross-Frequency Coupling Neurofeedback
Pain Reprocessing Therapy (PRT)
sEMG Biofeedback
Traditional EEG Power Neurofeedback
Z-score training Neurofeedback
What is a qEEG Brain Map and how does it help?
A qEEG Brain Map is an imaging technique that allows us to visualize your brain activity. Brain activity represents how your brain is functioning with all of its responsibilities. This brain activity/function is also known as Neuro Electrophysiology (Neuro EP). An MRI or CT of your brain shows us the structure of your brain (Neuro-Anatomy) but they do not show anything about functions/Neuro-Physiology.
The brain map helps us to know if you have too much brain activity in certain areas of your brain (for example, The Pain Network) or too little brain activity in certain areas of your brain (for example, The Attention Network). We then use this information to prescribe a specific treatment protocol for you, based on your exact brain activity shown on the brain map.
